The 2024 OADN Convention commences a few weeks earlier than in past years. We've heard from members that a few more weeks to prepare this year would be helpful, allowing you some extra time to process travel requests, find coverage for classes, and make travel plans.
We hope that this extension provides you with some additional flexibility in planning your trip to Tampa for what is gearing up to be one of OADN's best annual conferences to date!
Please review workshop selections with your colleagues before completing any registrations on their behalf.
Please note: Breakout Sessions are not pre-selected in the registration process, and seats are not reserved in advance. If a particular breakout session is important for your continuing education goals, please plan ahead to arrive early to secure your seat. Ample seating is available.
Learning how to use clinical judgment is a process that takes repetitive thinking, daily practice, and continuous application. This session demonstrates a scaffolding approach to learning clinical judgment, building Next Gen items, and preparing your students to be exceptional thinking nurses. Walk away with a toolbox full of teaching activities needed for student success.
presented by Cherie R. Rebar, PhD, MBA, RN, CNE, CNEcl, COI, FAADN & Nicole M. Heimgartner, DNP, RN, CNE, CNEcl, COI, FAADN
Do students tell you they are teaching themselves?
Do you struggle with “content creep”?
Do you allow time for cognitive processing with students?
Do you see incivility happening in your program?
Do you feel like you work harder than your students?
Do you know how to apply reasonable accommodations?
Do you know what academic freedom is? Does competency-based education concern you?
Do you use evidence-based educational practices?
During this session, these questions and other issues in nursing education will be explored. Attendees will be introduced to tangible, empowering strategies grounded in best educational and clinical practices through an engaging, interactive presentation. Each nurse educator will leave with their own toolbox of approaches to strengthen their practice in the educational environment.

The purpose of accreditation is to verify quality nursing education. Through a peer review process, Accreditation supports continuous improvement processes to help ensure that nursing programs provide a contemporary curriculum to prepare its graduates for nursing practice. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) is building a bridge to the future through the implementation of the 2023 Standards and Criteria effective January 1, 2024, for all accredited programs. The five 2023 Accreditation Standards reflect key expectations of quality nursing education programs. This workshop will provide an overview of the 2023 Standards and Criteria and help participants prepare for an initial or continuing accreditation visit.

Nursing Education is in a paradigm shift from a focus on curriculum structures and processes that drive teaching and learning to now one of competencies. Simulation and experiential learning will be powerful teaching tools in defining the path towards competency-based education (CBE). This interactive session will engage participants to explore the concept of competency-based education by actively achieving a competency during the session. Participants will align benchmarks, milestones, and formative assessments to simulation activities that support learner development in building competency. The focus of this session aims to 1. Engage attendees to view the shift of competency-based education from both a learner and educator lens and 2. Facilitate a dialogue that acknowledges learner and educator challenges, alike and 3. inspire a pathway utilizing simulation-based strategies that build toward a competency-based trajectory.
presented by Beth C. Phillips, PhD, RN, CNE, CHSE; Karen Taylor DNP, RN CNE; Kelly Simmons, DNP, RN, CNE; and Pamela Roland, MSN, MBA, RN
Do you feel fatigued in your faculty role? Is it hard to get motivated with the tension and change happening everywhere? Have you or your colleagues experienced burnout? If so, this workshop may be just what you need. We will talk briefly about faculty fatigue and burnout; what it looks like and what causes it. Then, we will spend the rest of the time working on ways to combat fatigue and burnout. By the end of the workshop, you will have a plan for yourself and your colleagues on strategies to promote and maintain healthy people and environments.

Practice readiness through clinical judgment formation has never been more crucial for the Associate Degree nursing student. We know that discharge planning begins on admission. That is why starting with day one of nursing school, we help students learn from a patient care perspective of safety. This hands-on workshop will give you firsthand experience with multiple strategies that can be used every hour of every lecture in the ADN/ASN program. You will explore practice readiness through the lens of everything that you teach.

This workshop explores the integration of generative AI in nursing education, emphasizing its transformative potential for simulation-based learning. Participants will explore the healthcare simulation standards of best practice (HSSBOPTM) and the applications of open-access generative AI tools. An overview of basic definitions and terminology will be provided. The workshop will incorporate discussions on the benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations surrounding AI integration, and offer a guided hands-on experience for participants from all simulation skill levels to engage with using generative AI tools. Key objectives include understanding HSSOBPTM principles and AI's potential, evaluating the benefits and challenges of AI integration, and considerations for applying AI-driven tools effectively. **Participants are encouraged to bring a device to actively participate in the process of developing an AI-assisted simulation scenario.

In this session, we will explore the journey these colleges took to navigate the world of grant writing. Together, we’ll demystify this process and demonstrate that grant writing and management are not as daunting as they may seem. We’ll explore how to effectively leverage our expertise as educators and program administrators and reveal how intentional writing to criteria, such as the Standards of Accreditation required in the Self-Study Report, forms a strong foundation for grant writing and reporting. Nurse leaders and faculty from these colleges have honed their skills through this process, resulting in remarkable achievements. Furthermore, we will discuss the vital role of health system academic-practice partnerships in securing grant funding and advancing nursing education. Learn how these collaborations have contributed to the success of the grant initiatives and how you can leverage similar relationships in your institution.
